Poultry School for Small Farms

On Saturday, Chris and I went to Poultry School for Small Farms at Cornell. It was quite an event.

The one day conference was geared to pastured poultry producers. They had sessions on all sorts of topics including pastured poultry for beginners, pasture health and USDA regulations. There was even a session on pastured turkeys by McDonald Family Farm. Although, most folks seemed to be interested in chickens only. That's good news for us!

I even recognized quite a few familiar faces from previous Cornell and Ag Extension events. By lunch (CU chicken BBQ), it was definitely starting to feel more like an episode of McLeod's Daughters, minus the trip to the auction. (I'm sure those will start this summer.) I don't know if we'll become "regulars" at these events, but at this point it's still quite interesting.

By the time we left, we had amassed heaps of handouts and leaflets, a few email addresses and more things to investigate before our turkey poults arrive. Now we just have to build a brooder, and some pasture pens. And about a hundred other things. The list just keeps growing!

For now, we are really motivated and are trying to work together to get the place ready for your Thanksgiving turkeys!

peace,
shannon
